ImageThe following is the award-winning short-film screenplay written by the editors here at HappyEmbryo.com.  This is the first installment of several to follow.

SELMAH T.
By Richie Lampasone
And Douglas Mason

Cut to a pick-up truck at night, with parking lights full-on, windows rolled down, and Rachmaninoff’s First Prelude playing.  A car pulls up from the corner of the screen.

WITZ (voiceover)
What if there were a lone pick-up in this parking lot, playing that music?

The stranger car pulls up to a parking space several places from the pick-up and turns off its lights

BRILLIARD (voiceover)
And its windows are rolled down.  Just parking lights.

WITZ (voiceover)
Yeah, and someone else pulls up near it.

Cut to view through driver’s windows of the stranger car, showing the pickup in the background.

BRILLIARD (voiceover)
Freaky.  What would you make of that?

Zoom out, and stranger gets out of car and exits frame.

Cut to closer view of pick-up as stranger approaches its open driver window

BRILLIARD (voiceover)
I mean, if there were this music playing, and no one was inside.

WITZ (voiceover)
I don’t know.

Cut to close of driver’s window of pick-up.  Somethings shifts behind the open passenger’s window in the frame.

WITZ (voiceover)
I don’t think anyone could handle it.

Quick cut to stranger’s lit and frightened face

Cut to WITZ sitting in car with BRILLIARD, staring out.

WITZ
I guess... (pause).

BRILLIARD
Wow.

WITZ
Yeah.  You know... let’s get out of here. (He begins to drive away from the park.)

BRILLIARD
Okay. Where should we go now?

WITZ
I don’t know. Best Buy?

BRILLIARD
It’s closed.

WITZ
Shit.

Roll Credits (final credit scroll)

Scene 2.

Cut to WITZ, who enters in his room and readies himself for sleep.

Scene 3.

Black. Cut to picturesque shot of WITZ sleeping. He has fallen out of bed. Cut to Dad.

DAD
Helloooooo, WITZ. How’s it goin’?

Cut to father’s face.

WITZ
Fine.

Dad makes some faces, trying to figure him out.

DAD
Fell outta bed?

WITZ
Looks like.

CUT to wide shot of room.

WITZ
So, are you going to let me get dressed?

DAD
Sure. (Exit.)

Scene 4.

CUT to kitchen. WITZ arrives in the kitchen. His mom is doing the crossword. He pours himself some orange juice and stares at the newspaper for a moment.

MOM
You got some mail yesterday.

WITZ
Really?

MOM gives him the letter.

WITZ
Wonderful. (He opens it.) Ah, crap.

MOM: What?

WITZ
Oh, the scholarship.

MOM takes the letter and looks at it, squinting.

MOM
That’s pretty good.

DAD
What’s this?

WITZ
The scholarship sucks.

DAD
Lemme see...yeah!

MOM
It’s fine.

WITZ gets up and walks into his room. He stares at the wall for a minute and then picks up his keys, which are located next to some of history’s finest literature. He then picks up the phone and calls BRILLIARD.

WITZ
Can I come over?

BRILLIARD
Yeah.

WITZ
Okay, bye. (He hangs up).
