Today Someone Smiled at Me and Said 'F*** you'   Print  E-mail
Wednesday, 31 March 2004

ImageI’ve been recovering from my surgery last week, and I can tell you all that the prognosis is positive!  But anyway, I was having a dandy time swimming at the pool (now I’m wicked fast), when the lifeguard blew his whistle at me.  At first, I was a little confused, but when I got out I realized that I had knocked into a little girl and that she was crying.  Naturally, I felt terrible.  So I told her I was sorry—and that’s when it happened.  Her mother came over, looked me up and down, tilted her head to the side, and, smiling, said, “Fuck you.”

I really didn’t know what to do.  These things don’t normally happen, but then again, as my life has proven, normal things don’t happen.  But what bothers me the most is that I don’t exactly know what I did to deserve the “Fuck you” gesture.  Was it just because I knocked into the kid?  I said I was sorry, so I can’t imagine she would still hold a grudge.  And anyway, she was smiling when she said it!  Maybe I was too insistent on saying “sorry”, but who can complain about that?!  I then started to wonder if she was freakophobic, but my experience with my elbows has been that most people just ignore them out of pity.  Pity!  Hah!  I swim faster than all of them!  Especially that weak little girl!

So I can’t really explain what happened that day.  But I can rest assured that I have the address of that little girl’s family (they have since sued me for harassment).  Maybe tonight I’ll pay them a webbed-visit.
